My wife & I have a small cruising sailboat on Galveston Bay near Houston, Texas. Years ago, we got brave and sailed about 200 miles down the coast to Corpus Christi ... for several hours, out of sight of land! 
So we're sailing into the marina one day and there's a big sailing cruiser tied up with the port name "Jersey, C.I." I thought New Jersey was pretty far away, and didn't know what "C.I." meant, so I asked them as we sailed by. "Channel Islands" came the response.
Oh.
They stayed for a season, chartering the boat for parties, etc. Might be a nice life.
