Oxford also is home to Kidlington airfield which has a famous pilot training school and was also home to Upper Heyford aerodrome (now closed) which was an important RAF base. One of the RAF's bombers was called the Heyford. For many years it was used by the United States Airforce. Planes that were based there included the McDonnell RF101C Voodoo and the General Dynamics F1-11 some of which took off from Upper Heyford to bomb Libya during the premiership of Margaret Thatcher.
