A Conversation for Motion Picture Association of America Ratings System

Troma ignores it

There is one studio that freely ignores the MPAA rating system, and manages to get away with it while making profits. This studio is Troma, located in both New York and a mythical New Jersey town. They know several tricks for avoiding the rating system. Feel free to visit them at their website to find out how to do it, especially if you're a young filmmaker and want to be able to express yourself: http://www.troma.com

Troma ignores it

There are also times, on occasion, when a studio will opt to not be reviewed by the MPAA ratings board. This means they just have to put on their advertising "this film is not yet rated" or words of that nature. This will inevitably limit the release of the film to theaters. Only 'arthouses' will feature it, and that's not a given.

However, the real money for movies like this is not in the box office, but at the BlockBuster. There are ways to work around the MPAA, but the answer is not to ignore it or work around it, but to either convince the MPAA to redesign their ratings system to better assist parents, or to find another organization that can educate parents what their children should watch from a more objective and less politically motivated viewpoint.

The MPAA holds much more weight in public opinions and big business than it deserves, and I'm glad to hear Troma is able to find a way around it. Other movie companies should follow suit, each in their own idiom.
