The Ancient Greeks knew about Pi, but they didn't give its present name. That was some English mathematician in the 18th century, as pointed out by "Joe".

Euler named it, along with introducing sigma notation for sums and hundreds of other notations.

It was not an English Mathematician but Welsh.
He used it first in 1706 and Euler adopted it also but later in 1737.
