The Act of Union

I heard recently on a quiz programme about the Act of Union of 1536, by which Henry VIII annexed Wales to England. You mention a 13th-century annexation: why was another necessary?
There have been several Acts of Union, apparently: according to Encarta, "statutes that accomplished the joining of England with Wales (1536), England and Wales with Scotland (1707), Great Britain with Ireland (1800) . . ." -- that last one is the date I had always heard, not 1801.
