Just how good is the evidence for the red-hot poker story? I can find several references that state this as "alleged" or "traditional" but none that come up with a solid contemporary account. On the other hand, it could just be that I can't find the right references on the net.

Well I gathered details from various places including stuff I found at the place it happened (I live a couple of miles down the road). I think the Berkeley family who still live at the castle probably know what they are talking about but then History is only ever written by the winners so it could all be false. Mind you, everything we learn as being 'fact' could be false so there you go!
