I´ve never watched Doctor Who apart from the recent series, which is decent. But I must say this group do sound rather interesting, the idea of a group being out of time like that. Are there any of the old episodes where they have an important part?

No, sorry. They were introduced in the novels that were published after the original series was cancelled (article coming soon).
Closest thing in the original series were the Time Lords, who cropped up in stories like The Deadly Assassin, The Invasion of Time, The Five Doctors, The Three Doctors, Arc of Infinity and The War Games.
