In the UK, coasters are usually a beer mat which is "non throw-away".

In other words, a permanent beer mat which is also used for hot drinks.

I love the "English" language! So much variety and so many meanings for the same thing!! I'm glad I was born into it, otherwise, I'd go crazier!

There is a word for collecting beermats.
The word is 'tegestology': I believe it comes from the Latin for a little rug.

I used to go out with this girl who collected beermats. She was only 17 at the time...
