Interesting article from the "other side of the story". I am an American and my new daughter-in-law is a relative of Captain Samuel Chester Reid. I didn't know about the connection to Judge Chester (my daughter-in-law is a Chester, so this makes sense), so this was new info.
In reading the many accounts of the Battle of Fayal, I never cease to be astounded by Capt. Reid's resourcefulness in the face of an overwhelming force. My feeling is that his years as a privateer gave him more hand to hand battle experience than the average British sailor.
The WWII destroyer named after him (USS Reid iii) also had a heroic battle history in the Pacific during that war.
