Synchronicity - when an idea's time is come, it often occurs to several people at once, independently.
Charles Sheffield wrote a book called "The Web Between the Worlds", in some editions of which there is a detailed engineering discussion in an appendix of exactly how the thing gets built. His method was to extrude the ropes from a spinnerette in orbit. Worth a read.
