Aluminium foil makes for a great wrapping medium. It folds easily, doesn't spring back once you have put a crease in it, (so less of a need for a third hand) is generally cheaper per foot than metalic wrapping paper, and can be recycled where aluminium recycling facilities exist, or reused if carefully unwrapped.
Plain brown paper, tastefully accessorised can make for a simple, understated wrapping scheme.
Folding a crease along the edge of the paper and then sealing with double sided tape lets you hide the joins.
