A Conversation for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Calming down the bowel

IBS is a real pain, in every sense of the word. With me, it seems to be brought on by stress: being busy, rushing about etc., which is tricky 'cos you can't just switch stress off. High-fibre foods help: dried apricots and prunes, mango. Licorice helps too, as do nuts and seeds, and lots of water. When all else fails I take a high-fibre drink a couple of times a day.

However, a discussion on the 'Dietary Solutions to Constipation' entry got me thinking that high-fibre foods are not going to do the trick for IBS without something to combat the inflammation in the bowel that may be causing an obstruction. Slippery Elm bark capsules (from health food shops) are good for this (also good for diarrhoea). They calm everything down and allow the high-fibre foods to do their job.
