Probiotic Chewing Gum

A probiotic chewing gum said to attack the cause of tooth decay could be on sale in the UK by 2007.
The new gum, developed by BASF, contains a strain of Lactobacillus, normally found in buttermilk and live yoghurt. It is said to bind to Streptococcus mutans - the bacteria responsible for tooth decay.
S. mutans normally sticks to the surface of teeth, where it produces an aggressive acid that breaks down enamel. Friendly bacteria in the gum, however, cause the bacteria to clump together so that they cannot attasch to the tooth surface.
