In amongst the trees between Wood Road and Tombs Road at Larkhill, just up the road from Old Sarum is a stone plinth with an attached plaque stating that this was the site of the first Army airfield in England, unfortunately I cannot remember any other details nor any dates but I think it was pre-WW1.

That's interesting bl666; I wasn't aware of that. Perhaps it pertains to Netheravon Airfield (Netheravon is just over 4 miles from Larkhill).
In my footnote I say,
"The oldest airfield [in Britain] resides in Farnborough where, in 1905, the British Army's Balloon School was formed. The oldest military airfield operates out of Netheravon, also in Wiltshire, first opened in June 1913 and, in the following year, used to train those Royal Flying Corps squadrons who would be sent to France at the outbreak of First World War."
. Well, Larkhill must be a good 7 miles from Old Sarum, so its a bit further than 'just up the road'

Great article! I was just browsing around and found it quite by chance, and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I'll have to go back there again soon. :D
I wonder whether I could draw your expertise & attention this way: F48874?thread=7240309 for a similar themed article I've put together?

Thanks Big Al! Hope you forgive the gatecrashing - I'm not trying to spam, honest, I just thought people interested in this article would have something to bring to the article on Eastleigh's airport.
