I have an interest in film making, at a very much hobbyist level. So I like to learn about film maker methods. I read about one thing Polanski did in Rosemary's Baby that I think is pretty creative. With Rosemary sitting in the bedroom talking on the phone, he has the camera dolly to the side, so the doorframe moves into the scene, blocking the view of her. The director of photography (I think) said that was crazy, you couldn't even see the actress. Polanski said it was great, leave it in.
So at the screenings, the audience watched this scene, and many were leaning to the side, trying to see around the door. Talk about bringing the audience into the movie ...

There's no doubt that the way this film was shot is as frightening, maybe more so, than the actual story. I've always found it a very disturbing film. My kid likes to watch scarey stories, she has seen Poltergeist, Alien and the like, but she's only 10 and I can't see her managing this ancient old movie for another 5 years or so.
