Do not, by any means, go into Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge - two towns near the park - they are trashy, flashy attempts to be the Vegas of the Appalachians, and correspondingly, if you don't want to be disillusioned, avoid them like the plague.
However, I do recommend an excursion to Asheville, NC. It is a rather pretty little city, and the Biltmore House is worth seeing.
