The real cause for the growth in quality of "VDP" is that the production methods and blends are not as strictly controlled as in the grander "appelation controllee". This has allowed producers to use more innovative methods to create wines more in tune with the modern palate. Often the "AP" wines are very formularic at their lower price points (much the same as American Wine in fact - and cheese as well - have you ever eaten American cheese ? - probably goes well with their wine ! - wouldn't want to try it though ! ).

Well... Innovative methods of making wine is quite OK but neither should wine be sold in "tetra-paks" (it REALY should not ) nor has anti-freezer anything to do in wine.
A bit less innovative and a bit more Quality would do the VDP probably good
