The brakes on the Hudson were supposed to have been fixed weeks ago,
and the tyres were supposed to have been checked just that morning.
The incident between the car and four frightened horses should not have occurred. The horsepower of the auto should have been more than a match for the speed of the animals. But an earthquake can do strange things to reality.
The funeral for the man happened two days after the funerals for two of the horses.
