Hmm.....I think that the ultimate butty is actually the Wigan Butty.
This is a highly elaborate yet flexible sandwich form invented in Wigan, not surprisingly.
For this you need:
2 slices buttered bread*
1 pie.**
To make a wigan butty, but the pie between the bread and eat it.
Notes:
*or even better, a barmcake. ( kind of a big flat bun - prevents gravy spillage )
*My favourite is a hot mince beef pie. Pie can be hot or cold.

It has to be a hot pie. If you use a cold one you get bits of gelatin everywhere. I'm not at all keen on gelatin
