A Conversation for International Driving Etiquette

Driving in Ireland

Post 1

When driving in rural South West Ireland, it is normal to come across farmers, etc, coming in the other direction on foot.
Out of politeness they often raise their index finger by way of greeting.

The driver should repond by raising the index finger of their right hand whilst keeping the entire hand on the steering wheel.(NOTE: Left hand drive vehicles should return to mainland Europe immediately)

It is common for regualr drivers around local areas to know many people and to save time drivie with their index finger permanently pressed to the windscreen in a continous greeting mode.

Do not attempt any of the above moves in London as more likely to be:

A. Arrested
B. Car- Jacked
C. Waved at by every nutter in the capital

Up until quite recently you did not have to take a driving test to get the drivers lisence in Ireland.
It was adequate to do a short theoretic test, and do some training with someone else, someone not
a professional instructor.

Coming from abroad, to keep it short;
That's easy to notice.

Italy and Spain might contain an agressive driving style never seen this side of The Frogstar, and
in France they just don't give a damn, but never have I seen such unskilled drivers as in Ireland.

Otherwise it's the best country I've ever been to though.

Slainte!
