Many slimmers find that, after weeks of successfully losing weight, their metabolism slows down and they hit a plateau, where the 'pounds are slower to come off'. This is discouraging to many, who lose their resolve and end up putting the weight back on.
The combination drug, Excalia, developed by Orexigen of California, is said to get around this by tricking the hypothalamus into keeping the metabolism running fast.
Excalia consists of two drugs which are already widely used - against epilepsy and smoking. The pill also boosts levels of a hormone that stops us feeling hungry.
Note that, n December '06 it was repoted that the number of NHS (UK) prescriptions for anti-obesity drugs has gone up almost 600% since 1999.
