Ever gotten a tattoo? The sound of the tattooing machine (or "gun" as the artistic sadists like to refer to them) has a noise very similar to that of a dentist's drill and just the thought of those needles going in and out of your flesh at lightning speed (while dribblets of blood ooze out of the holes) is enough to send most people running for cover.
... so why do so many people say the darn things are so addictive?
