What does this mean?

"One of the rules that separated the two bodies was that there used to be a life-time ban for playing in the League if you were Union registered, even if you played as an amateur."
I read that as "you were not allowed to play in the League if you were ever Union registered". This may be true, but I thought the situation was: "you would receive a lifetime ban from the Union if you had ever played in the League."
I think it could do with re-phrasing if you mean the latter. And if you mean the former, you might like to mention the Union ban as well.
What does this mean?

yeah i think it might need a tweak there
as is my understanding....
if you was registered with league you couldn't play union if you got caught playing another code you faced a ban from your registered code
now to play at a armature level you need to register but you can play both codes
