Isn't the Raspberry Pi aimed at 'Computer Literacy' just as the Acorn BBC'B' Computer was way back in the 80's.
BBC Basic was developed with that in mind. Shouldn't the Raspberry Pi pick up where the old Beeb left off?
One of the original creators of BBC Basic has taken it to a new level. F78332?thread=3544044

Yes indeed - I've covered the computer literacy matter in A13735596. Will take a look at that link later (at work right now).

Tufty - The article reads well.
Having come through the 80's computer literacy program I got a great deal out the old Beeb that I bought, at the age of 55, all those years ago. It was stiil working when I put it up in the attic. I regret that the literacy program never got me into Assembly and Machine Coding but BBC Basic and the Acorn/BBC computer were both created specifically for the literacy program.
What seems to be happening today with the Raspi is that the computer along with Python are starting at a higher level. I just hope that it will be possible to put the old Beeb and BBC Basic into the new creation.

My argument in favour of Python is that it is becoming reasonably popular in web development as well as being a solid language for learning coding. Teaching the basics at secondary school might lead some students to study the more complex, lower level stuff at university.
As for BASIC, I'm pretty sure the enthusiasts won't pass by the opportunity to provide some flavour of the language for the RPi.

It will be interesting to see how the Raspi is packaged when it hits the education market. As you imply Python is already available today, as was Basic in the days of the old Beeb but the BBC decided to tweek Basic to there specific need and to drive a computer that was also created to suit the job. Could it be we get 'Pi'thon ? .
