A Poem for the UK 'National Poetry Day' (October 9th)
Goldilocks and the Four Bears
Goldilocks forbore
to heed the counsel of her elders.
Her curiosity led her
to houses inhabited by bears.
When food is involved,
animals show no forbearance,
nor do they take kindly
to strangers in their beds.
Three? No, four bears -
the tabloids got it wrong.
Mama, Papa, Baby Bear,
and the Honourable Adolphus Bear
who prosecuted Goldilocks
for Trespassing
and Wanton Disregard
for Others' Personal Property.
The wise child listens
to words of her forebears:
one's reasons matter little
when one is clearly in the wrong.
Now Goldilocks must cool her heels,
locked away in a sorry place,
where the days are long, the beds are hard,
and the porridge is seldom, if ever, just right.
