It is a common misconception that "y'all" is spelled "ya'll", but if you examine its origins carefully, you willl see that it is a contraction of "you" and all". Now, why would anyone truncate the "ou" from "you" and then split up the "all"? Exactly. In fact, the proper way is to combine the "y" from "you" and the "all" from "all" with an apostrophe, yielding: "y'all".
