By modern standards, the *head of the table* would be the end with your back to the wall and a clear view of the entrance. I imagine that would be a good description then, as well.

In a previous life, I was a mid level manager for a large company. I was really an engineer, but this is what they do to engineers who are less than brilliant. So I got an office, in which I was sitting one day talking to another engineer/manager when a consultant walked in, looked around and said, "If you angled your desk across the office, you'd have better command of the door." And then he left. The two of us said in unison, "Command of the door?" I never was considered for vice president ...
