A Conversation for Derby's Unusual Suburb Names
Dunkirk

Originally from Derby, i'd never heard of anyone refer to that particular area as Dunkirk... if they did, they were surely talking about Dunkirk Street, or the Dunkirk pub which (still ?) sits on a nearby corner.
Residents of Derby never use New Zealand or California to describe where they live... and I don't believe those names appear on anything other than local maps. I was always led to believe they were just postal districts before post codes were invented.
Whilst on the subject there is a suburb of Derby called Mackworth (a name people do use), the streets of which appear to have been named by an unimaginative town planner with a London tube map open on his desk - Mornington Crescent and Kensal Rise are two such streets in that area.
