They are chiefly used in fortune telling by those who know no better.
Staves, cups, swords, and coins are not the suits of the tarot pack per se. It's a regional pattern still used in southern Europe and Latin America. The first pack of European playing cards used these suit symbols. Modern tarot packs use the French suit system of hearts, spades, diamonds and clubs. Such packs are used in France, Germany, and Austria to play tarot card games. Like conventional playing cards,the appearance of the tarot pack also evolved. The English-speaking world has sadly been kept in the dark by the metaphysical and occult publishing industries regarding the true nature of tarot. This article is a good one as it brings much needed light to the topic. I would only recommend that it should also be classified under "card games" because that was the original purpose of the tarot pack and because players of card games would also be interested. It's time for tarot to escape from this occult ghetto into which the metaphysical community has consigned it so everyone may enjoy it.
