i can't believe i'm the first to discuss this entry.
for a boy growing up in northern california in the 60's there was a god and his name was willie mays.
you can say that ruth was better because he could pitch, that cobb played in the days of the dead ball, you can say anything you want. for those who saw mays work his magic the debate can only be over the second best of all time.
hit for the fences, hit for average, hit in the clutch. steal bases. play the biggest center field in baseball and throw 'em out at the plate. he did it all better than anybody.
he may have been on the decline at the end of the 60's but he still did amazing things. his catch against the fence whille colliding with bonds may have been his best ever.
i remember listening to the giants' game on the radio one day. mays up with 1 on & 2 out in the bottom of the ninth. mays fouled off pitch after pitch, not accepting a walk, until he got the ball he could hit out of the park to win the game.
the greatest.
