A Conversation for Ira Hayes - an Unwilling Hero

I really enjoyed the Edited Guide entry on Ira Hayes:

A1118396 (from original posting A1107767)

However, my only issue with it was a semantic one. You refer to Hayes' drinking as a way to drive away the "demons" of his guilt, which might make it sound like his survivor's guilt was somehow unnatural or wrong. Maybe it was just a normal response for an empathetic, just person to have. After all, Hayes was forced to live with the fact that many of his fellow soldiers and friends would never come back to the hero's welcome he was given by a government that would not do much if anything to alleviate the suffering, which it had historically brought about, of the Pima people.

Just wondered what your thoughts were as to that particular choice of words.

Regards.

The H2G2 Editors

Hi Insomnia2,

We can see your point, but we suspect 'the demons of drink' is a common enough phrase for most people to read it more as a euphemism than a judgemental view. But what we can do is move this conversation to the entry so that other readers can see your comment.
