Well now that you mention it, recently I noticed when a group of Japanese tourists who were posing for a photograpgh, they held the V-sign across the forehead in a similar manner as the American army use their flat handed salute at a superior officer.
I wonder if that had anything to do with Winston's jibe at the nazi salute, maybe?

Do you remember those 'Victory V Lozenges'?: flat, rectangular (with the corners cut off) beige/khaki coloured sweets which were HOT, but nicely so.

What was it we did with our fingers in the Wolf Cubs when we dib-dib-dibbed or whatever it was? I've forgotten now but that Japanese tourist reference seemed a bit like it.

If it's the same as what we did, it was the first three fingers all together. In cubs they were held, pointing upwards, at about shoulder level. In scouts we saluted whilst holding our hands like that.
