Musicians who play modern woodwind instruments are known to use cigarette papers to help clean their instruments.
The common technique is to put a single paper in between the hole and the pad used to cover it. You then close the pad over the hole as tightly as you can, and then draw the paper out slowly. Whatever grime is sticking to the pad will come out with the paper, with no risk of damaging the pad itself. The papers may also be used for a quick scrub on any hard-to-reach area on the intrument's surface.
This is a useful trick, and also a nice excuse if you don't want someone to know why you've got a bunch of cigarette papers.
