A Conversation for World War I Flying Aces
Baron von Richthoven's flying circus

Among the reasons his team was called that was that they were constantly on the move from one location to another and Baron von Richthoven encouraged his team to have their planes painted in their coats of arms, his own plane, the famous red Fokker triplane, also had white bands crossing the wings, front to back, in the middle of the wing with equal armed black crosses centered on them.
This basic design was later adopted by one of his pilots, Herman Goering, as the earliest version of the WW II Nazi flag, a red field with a vertical white pale, with a black, equal armed cross centered in it.
