Is it really necessary?
Can I fix everything to a piece of ply and bolt that to the wall?
Then I could tinker with it all at eye level and have my 'own-brand' pc laid out as I like it. Labelled too.

In a short answer, yes you can.
It will need to be mapped out for placement, and standoffs will be needed to keep things from touching the wood.

Is there an entry on "how to build a pc from scratch", do you know?
I'd like to have a go, and build something that looks crap but flies like the wind.

If there isn't an entry, someone should make one. I'm certain a good lot of people know how to do it. It's essentially a ten-piece puzzle, provided you get the right parts that fit together...
I'll have a go at making an article if no-one's made one. Or, we could make it a collaborative topic...

Try these, they may help you.
It depends on the hardware brands you go with.

No problem. Buy and bolting I can handle. It's going to be dip-switches, 1-pins and compatibility that are going to wind me up.
