Since sand shifts, why are we certain that Captain Cook got it wrong? Does a replenishment supply of sand come washed along from the mainland, or is it a temporarily-above-sea thing that will vanish with global warming? What keeps the sand in place, if it can be so heavily logged?
There are barrier islands on the east coast of Florida, and if you remove the grass, the next storm washes the island away completely.
