the root vowel is what changes in strong verbs.
I'm not sure whether the "what's this?" is rhetorical or not. Alexander Scott? A roundel? Renaissance Scots English? James Shirley? Early Modern English? Or is "a mixed bag" an answer you provide for your own question?
I console myself that "Wyrd oft nereð unfægne eorl, þonne his ellen deah."
