A Conversation for Titivillus - the Typo Demon
The Wicked Bible
Baron Grim Started conversation May 4, 2010
Surely, Titivillus' greatest triumph of all was the Wicked Bible. This edition, published in London in 1631 omitted one particular word, "not". This resulted in the commandment "Thou shalt commit adultery."
King Charles I was so outraged that he ordered every copy burned (only 11 survive today) and the printers were brought before the Star Chamber, found guilty, had their printers licenses revoked and fined £300 (the equivalent of a life's earnings).
