A Conversation for Snooker

How to say snooker?

Snooker seems an improbable word to my American eye, and calls to mind a hairnet with hooks, or a children's book sticky with jam. smiley - smiley

Does the double 'o' in it rhyme with 'moon', or with 'book'?

Ah, now this is something of a thorny subject, and something I could well have written about.smiley - smiley

Us English wot invented the game, would pronounce the 'oo' as in 'moon'. However, Americans - who have a nasty habit of mucking about with the language - use the term 'snooker' frequently in pool games to describe a 'hidden' ball, and will insist on pronouncing it as in 'book'.

I'm guesing, unles you want to look strangely out of place at your local pool hall, you should adopt the latter pronunciation.smiley - biggrin

What, "snucker"? How odd... Sounds like a cross between sneaking around and sniggering...

You've obviously never listened to Sid Waddell's co-commentaters during the Mosconi Cup. They say it exactly like that.
