A Conversation for Gilbert and Sullivan - Opera-writing Duo

Where would we be...?

I just want to remind the world of the great influence Gilbert & Sullivan had on the musical and operetta world.
Without them, Cole Porter would not have written his great musical numbers the way he did (being inspired by both lyrics and music), for Gershwin, Berlin, Rodgers and all the other musical composers quite the same can be said. Leonard Bernstein was a huge fan of Gilbert & Sullivan; the saying goes that in pauses during the rehearsals for West Side Story, he sang the whole third act of "The Mikado"!
Well, just think about it before you (mis)judge the two guys...

I believe that "The Mikado" has only _two_ acts.

Which would explain why everyone else wasn't irritated by Bernstein singing the third act of "The Mikado" during "West Side Story" rehearsals. smiley - smiley
