West Midlands Air Ambulance:The County Air Ambulance Trust is dedicated to supporting the Midlands Helicopter Emergency Medical Service.
It serves an area of 6,000 sq miles and a population of over 6 million in: Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, Worcestershire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and adjoining areas especially Powys.
From its bases at RAF Cosford, near Wolverhampton, Strensham North Services on the M5, and The East Midlands Airport at Castle Donnington near the M1 the helicopters are available for 10 hours, seven days a week.
History of the Air Ambulance:The West Midlands first helicopter emergency medical service started in May 1991. Coverage was extended on a step by step basis, increasing the hours and days flown until today three helicopters serve a population of six million, flying all daylight hours and seven days a week. The recently added third helicopter has now extended the service to cover the counties of Leicestershire and Derbyshire from its base at the East Midlands Airport. Each helicopter carries two paramedics and can speedily transfer one or two patients to the most appropriate hospital according to their needs.
It is this ability to fly directly to a specialist medical centre which enables the service to save lives which might otherwise be lost. Prompt arrival, expert paramedic skills and rapid transfer available with the use of this equipment has also meant shorter stays in hospital and enhanced recoveries for hundreds of emergency patients.
Police Dog Unit:Dogs play a vital role in modern police work and are used by every force in the country. There are approximately 2,500 police dogs in England and Wales. Their naturally powerfully sense of smell and agility are used by the police for finding drugs, explosives and human remains. Police dogs are also trained to track and catch criminals, for crowd work, and in prisons.
The most popular breed for police work is the German Shepherd, chosen for its intelligence and highly developed senses, they also tend to be more instinctively suspicious of strangers than other breeds. Dogs need to have the right temperament to be suitable for police work – those who may make unsuitable pets, because they are too energetic and demanding, are often ideal.
