This is Week Thirty Three of Giford's Bible Study Programme.

Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.

Psalm 104:5

Length: 1/5

Controversy: 1/5

The Earth is fixed and cannot be moved. See also Isiaih 45:181, Psalm 93:12, Psalm 96:103, 1 Chron 16:304, etc.

Christian Responses

The standard response to this seems to be simply to deny that 'fixed' means 'not moving'. Instead, the claim is that this refers to the Earth being in a steady orbit.

1For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it2the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.3the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved4the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.
