...often originate with tornados or water spouts (tornados coming up over the sea or other large bodies of water), which having suctioned large quantities of material into the clouds can carry it considerable distances before dropping it again.
This is possibly how the Galapagos tortoises got there.
Recent accidental explosions in explosive factories or major explosive consignments may sometimes also be implicated.
