The h2g2 Poem

Tommy

We kill to put the world to right.
Come my heroes, come join the fight.

We'll give you a uniform, and even a gun,

You'll feel six feet tall, killing is fun.

We'll give you medals when the enemies run,

So take the kings shilling, say goodbye to your mum.

I took it, I went, I had a uniform, I had a gun;

I didn't feel six feet tall, the enemy didn't run.

They ran at me, they shot at me, God I miss my mum.

So it's over the top with a tally -ho-hay,

The enemy open fire and blow them all away.

They're only young people in the prime of their life

But what do you say to their children and wife?

You say 'he was a hero, we're sorry that he's dead

He's lying in a ditch somewhere with a bullet in his head.'

So now the war is over, the memories subside

The allies are our enemies, the enemy on our side.

But what about the Tommy, as gallantly he fought?

This sickened world we live in, is what poor Tommy bought...
