The h2g2 Mathematical Institute
The h2g2 Mathematicial Institute has been founded to promote and organise the writing of entertaining, clear and interesting maths articles on the Guide. Its main method of doing this is the Univeristy through which the writings of members are organised into coherent projects based around a topic.
All articles which are to be included in an h2g2 MI project must follow a set of guidelines intended to ensure that even the layperson will find something interesting to read. The MI Guidelines can be found here.
Call for Solutions!
Current Problems
Building is hard work and one builder with an eye for a challenge has made it even harder. See if you can help him randomly build a house by the Random Construction Problem.
Read and contribute to Previous Calls for Solutions.
What are Calls for Solution?
A call for solutions is a way for the MI to provoke mathematical thinking and a fun way to share and collaborate on an idea. Similar to a call for entries or a call for contributions1, a call for solutions asks the community to come together to solve a problem, think about proofs and suggest further research. After everyone has had their say, the best ideas are put into either an entry or a University project and the whole lot is sent off to be edited.
What notation?
Maths requires heavy use of notation which rarely translates well over ASCII. Help devise a standard notation for h2g2 fora by taking part in the notation discussion.
NB - please use the following convention for mathematical articles. Use TeX to HTML to generate the table containing the formatted HTML of the expression then include the expression as TeX source underneath. The formatted version is for the subs and readers before it is editted, the TeX is for the in-house editing team so they can generate pictures for the editted guide. An example is here

The Project Arc
The current full project arc can be found here. The aim is to work through each of the projects sequentially although order can be affected by submissions.
We are currently looking for submissions for Project: Great Mathematicians (The Greeks). The Great Mathematician series of projects is going to be a warts and all set of biographies of the life and times of some of the past three millenia's greatest mathematicians. Marvel at their stories that drove them through maths.
The next project will be Project: Introductory Algebra.
How MI projects are processed
The first stage is the owner of the project (the MI member in charge) calls for entries to his work through various means. When the project is deemed (by the member) to be finished, an MI MathEd is called in to check through the articles, validate the maths and TeX markup and generally offer tips to polish it off to the MI standards. The next stage is where a SubEd is called in to check over the english and bring it up to scratch (spelling, punctuation and grammar and all that.) The final stage is where the project is passed over to the Editorial staff who have the final say as to the format of the project. With any luck it is approved and joins the ranks of completed MI projects here.
