I was teaching at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where I had been for 3 years. I loved it and despite what follows I think it is still my favourite post.
Some of my favourite students came to see me before taking the train to Beijing. I had tickets booked on the same train a month later as the first leg of my journey home on the trans-Siberian.
About a fortnight later my pensioner neighbours made a huge effort to contact me through the British consulate so that my thirteen year old could be assured that I was still alive - my students by that time were not. When I eventually got home, they wouldn't let me pay the phone bill.
If I ever get round to writing the memoirs, there's a whole chapter, but for the time being I just take the time every year to remember Tiananmen Square smiley - starsmiley - star(who never managed to get on the trans-Siberian)

So many thoughts tumble into my head at once. A lurch in the pit of my stomach at the horror of what happened there. Just how different that world is. The transience of life. And, of course: where do I put in an advance order for these memoires?

bit more family tree searching to do first. I have found a George Regalia Jones that I would like a bit mote information on. Must take advantage of free service while the local library is still open.
After that, the autobiography should keep me alive for a few years.smiley - starsmiley - star

WS, you are absolutely NOT allowed to die until you've written your memoirs, had them published, and held a book signing event.
Is that clear ?

Actually, scratch that. You are not allowed to die, full stop.

Dear Phil
Thank you. I would have missed that. But I wish I hadn't read it. Couldn't see for tears at the end.
How very, very brave to refuse to work. When I think what I've done in the past 25 years!
The rest of you can select my 8th Desert Island Disc. I've got one each for my first seven decades smiley - hugsmiley - starsmiley - star
