I know journals are not my forte, rare as they are. But I pondered what I might do for one as we approach the New Year. Well, a sad anniversary today kinda put it together for me. Today is the 20th anniversary of the passing of a musician that I have always enjoyed, ... Ricky Nelson.
(For those of you who don't know who I mean, ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricky_Nelson )
Specifically, 2 of his tunes have always rung true with me. "Garden Party", when he was boo'd out of Madison Square Gardens for not playing his traditional stuff, but for being who he was. Well, I entered h2g2 as a personna ... And when I left it behind to be who I truly am, I lost quite a number of "friends". Some going their own ways, others because I couldn't continue to be the care-free, playing lad that I had portrayed. One or two because they had also out-grown their original personnae and friends. And so, "Garden Party" suits me well, ... To quote the chorus, "But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well. You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself."
The other tune that is exactly me, is "It's up to you" (Again, for those not in the 'know', ... http://www.lyricsdomain.com/18/ricky_nelson/its_up_to_you.html )
With every person I have known in real life and on-line, my simple understanding has always been clear. I will never push or crowd a connection or relationship. It is fully up to the other to stay or go, as they choose. I am NOT a door mat to be walked on, but I will leave it up to the other party ...
So with these thoughts in mind, I enter a New Year without resolutions other than to simply BE who I am. No false fronts, no alter-ego's in some perpetual role-playing game, ... simply me. And with this to offer, I wish anyone reading this (friend, lurker or curiosity seeker) a fine, healthy and happy new year to come.

Hello Nick,
I don't know either of the songs, but read the lyrics for the second song.
I wish you a very good year, just stay yourself, and you'll be fine

If you've ever watched Father Dowling Investigates, Tracey Nelson who played Sister Steve is Ricky Nelson's daughter and according to my mum she now has her own big band and sings with them. I have a couple of CDs with Hello Mary-Lou on them which always gets my feet tapping and mum kept dad's John Wayne videos and she still has Rio Bravo (Or is is Rio Grande) which also stars Rick (as he was then) Nelson.
That sums up my Ricky Nelson knowledge

Ya know, the Father Dowling mysteries, and most of the westerns, were ALL way before my time. My grand-Dad told me about them.
A bit odd, how often Tracey played a nun, isn't it? Not just that series, but in a couple of movies as well. Hmmm ...
In any case, he proved to be one of the few good and talented folks who have passed, and NOT left some nasty or lurking secrets. He was simply a good man, raised a family well and had quite a talent. I even like his later years music.
