Hiya, welcome to hootoo; don't worry, it's all a bit strange at first, but we're a "mostly harmless" bunch!

My friend went out to teach in the Dominican Republic; but that was way back in the 80's, so things may have changed. She stayed for a couple of years & enjoyed it, great climate, generally friendly people, loved the food, though being vegetarian meant she didn't try quite a lot of it. Apparently once you venture inland, away from the touristy bits, it's really a fascinating place, though it does help to speak Spanish.

The roads & general standard of driving she said were apalling!

Are you going for a holiday or to live?

Oooh, i believe they have a few mountains (and maybe even a volcano?)so you could combine the two....hey, maybe run up the volcano then when it's a bit too warm dive down into the sea; sorta Mega Sauna Bungee experience.

The lad would be either most impressed or totally horrified!!! (or worse "ho hum; here is Mother going nutty again...")

Anyway, have fun & take notes: maybe write a Guide Entry about it when you get back?

Smileys are easy.

Here is a smiley:

smiley - zen

Run the mouse over it: Do Not Click: you will see it says zen. Now, to use that; you type in a triangle bracket facing left:

<
then the word zen

(in little letters & get the spelling right)

then the bracket going the other way

>

which might need cap shift on your keyboard. Mine's french, so it's all different anyway!

But don't leave a space before or after the word.

Then, before you post the message, check it's OK by using the "preview" button; if the little smiley doesn't appear, you can work out what's wrong, edit & try again using preview. Eventually it will work out, then press "Post message" & have a cup of smiley - tea or a smiley - stiffdrink & give yourself a round of smiley - applause cos you now know how to do smileys!

Next step: CLICK on one of them; any one will do; you get taken to the page with a list of all the smileys we use on h2g2; print this out (soon you will remember most of them)smiley - winkeye & you can insert them as you wish.

Phew. By the way, i am also an Ace; Feisor is too; we all know each other & try to work together to help newbies!

*waves to Feisor*smiley - biggrin
