They lay in bed, her asleep, him awake. The lyrics that had haunted him all day long echoed in his head.

“And twenty miles away she waits alone for me
But when I try to picture her you’re the one I see”

He shouldn’t feel like this. He didn’t want to feel like this. But it was out of his hands. The damage was done. He had fallen in love with someone else?

“And as I look at you and I fall under your spell
Well I know I should be thinking of her lying there herself”

So what now? He knew only one thing. He had to break the heart of the woman he’s loved for almost thirty years? What about the family? What will their children say?

“Be my downfall be my great regret be the one girl
That I’ll never forget
Be my undoing be my slow road to ruin tonight”

The morning sun poured through the kitchen window as he handed her a cup of tea.
She smiled sweetly and carefully took a sip from the hot cup.

Quietly he began to speak.

‘Mary, there’s something I need to tell you.’
