Haiku for the Winter Season
Toasty the Snowman Started conversation Dec 18, 2003
I just love this time of year. The temperature finally gets 'right', and the colors all more nearly approximate the way I usually 'see' things for my B&W photographs. Anyway, I thought I'd leave a few charming mind pictures for you about my favorite season. Hope you experience many an "Aha!" moment as you encounter the depths of these haiku.
Winter
Dimpled white blanket
Bright crystal frosting falls from
Brittle tree branches
Such indistinct shapes
Round humps on a smothered lawn
Snowflakes came to rest
Crimson wings flutter
Cardinal can't hide in trees
On a winter's field
Grey bark and white frost
Swishing tails and cascading snow
Squirrels chase limb to limb
Brown warm body stands
Steaming breath escapes, ears twitch
Cautious deer in glade
Icicles dripping
Silent shush of feet in snow
Then a snowball fight
Frost in the treetops
Reflecting midnight starshine
Walking hand-in-hand
Chilled lips part to kiss
Under bare trees flocked in white
Spent breath a delight
Snuggle in blankets
Before a blazing Yule fire
Planning days to come
Sharing all our days
Cuddling to find a warm spot
Before winter leaves
Stand by the thousands
White-robed arms reach for the sky
Trees pleading winter
Eternal opposites
Moon and stars mediating
Night sky over snow
Coals burning inside
No one would guess the power
Breath from a parka
Mirror in the woods
Carefully tread lest you slip
And plunge through the ice
Howling at the moon
Blowing myriad pale shards
Comes a Nor’easter
Pull the sheet over
Still the chill fills completely
Lying under snow
Prison bars on face
Light filters through window blinds
Arrested by snow
Blue sky broods to gray
Trees buffeted in chill wind
Winter mood lingers
Late snowy evening
Shadowed blackbird wings flutter
Against panes of glass
Small yellow sun strives
Across interstellar void
To melt stubborn snow
Frosty air clinging
To hands seeking to be warmed
By another’s soft skin
Shadows stretch longer
Than at dusk on summer’s eve
On a winter’s day
Winter morning haze
Intrudes through bedroom window
Opens sleepy eyes
Monochrome image
Snow and shadow mingle in
Boughs of oak and ash
Sword of Damocles
Hangs suspended from the roof
Icicle glinting
Glinting ice crystals
Cling to rough steps on shale crags
Waterfall frozen
Little white hillocks
Melt slowly in tree shadows
Reminisce of snow
Caught in high branches
Hazy blue sky droops and clings
Resists Spring’s approach
